Overview
Itinerary: Days 1-8
Itinerary: Days 9-14
The Land of Fire and Ice has emerged as the must see destination for travellers over the last ten years. This is an ancient land created by volcanoes, sculpted by ice and inhabited by Vikings, and on your Dreamtreks journey you will be a part of it all.
Begin your tour in Reykjavik; Iceland's capital of cool, before travelling to enormous glaciers, countless waterfalls, fjords and fairytale townships.
The combination of amazing, eclectic scenery in conjunction with its unique culture make Iceland a completely unforgettable experience.
Days 1 - 3: Arrive at Keflavik Airport and head to Reykjavik. We stay at Hotel Gardur in the heart of the city. We spend two days exploring the Reykjavik's stores, cafés and museums. A trip to the World famous 'Blue Lagoon' can also be arranged.
Days 4 - 5: From Reykjavik we head South, leaving early in the morning to venture into the Golden Circle. We will visit Gullfoss (the "golden waterfall"), the hotwater Geyser and Thingvellir National Park - where the American and European continental plates meet to produce a crevasse filled with crystal clear water. We will then drive to Solheimahjaleiga Farm, where we will spend the night, passing black sand beaches and waterfalls along the way. Solheimahjaleiga Farm is situated right beneath the volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which famously erupted in 2010 and brought flights across Europe to a standstill.
Days 6 - 7: We continue our drive around the South coast towards Skaftafell National Park, stopping at the black sand beach of Reynisfjara and town of Vik, where we may be lucky enough to see some puffins! We arrive at our overnight stop of Svinafell Farm, which is only five minutes from Skaftafell and sits beneath the highest peak in Iceland and the largest glacier in Europe. There are many amazing activities to do in this area including hiking in the park and on the glacier, puffin islands, sailing on the glacial lagoon and horse riding.
Day 8: From Svinafell we drive towards the lobster town of Hofn. Along the way we can enjoy a dip in some private hot tubs and a delicious lobster lunch.
From Hofn we continue up the majestic fjords of the East cost before reaching our overnight stop at Skjoldolfsstadir, near Egilsstadir town. Nearby we have both the largest lake and largest forest in Iceland.
Day 9: From Skjoldolfsstadir we drive further North to Asbyrgi canyon, the lake Myvatn and mighty waterfall Detifoss, before heading on to the town of Husavik. Here we have a great opportunity to do a whale watching tour, before staying overnight in Keldunes.
Day 10: Next we explore the capital of the North, Akureyri, and its stunning surroundings. Take in the sights of Vaglaskogur forest, picturesque swimming pools and Akureyri town itself with its deep fjord, nearby mountains, cafés, churches and much more.
Day 11: From Akureyri we head West to Budardalur and the nearby Vogur lodge where we will spend the night. Close by in Eiriksstadir we visit an amazing Viking farm and museum. We also visit the nearby farm of Erpsstadir, where there is a new cow stable and they make the most delicious ice-cream "Beint fra byli" which means straight from the farm. Very nice!
Day 12: Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Snaefellsnes is something really special. Volcano Snaefellsjokull, lava caves, small towns, cosy coffee shops, National Park Snaefellsnes, harbours and beaches are some of the things we will see and visit here. In Snaefellsnes we stay at Hotel Framnes.
Day 13: From Snaefellsnes we head to Borgarfjordur, a little town with a lot to offer. It was here that Snorri Sturluson wrote many of the Icelandic sagas. In Borgarnes town we visit the Settlement Centre of Iceland where the story of the settlement of Iceland and the saga of the great Viking Egill Skallagrimsson is told. We will also enjoy a tasty meal at the restaurant and chat to the friendly locals.
Day 14: An old Icelandic proverb says "A good beginning makes a good ending", and accordingly today we return to Reykjavik to relax in the hot tub and hope to see the Northern Lights to bring our journey to a close.
